At the end of part IV, George and his comrades had left for Mersa Matru.....

Jun 27th

Moved East across desert, bombs dropped and one plane brought down (Wellington Bomber) in flames. Jerry tanks three quarters of a mile away.

Jun 28th

Continued East, destination unknown. One of our planes brought down. 12 noon, more bombs dropped. Jerry has been on our tail most of the way.

Jun 29th

Moved again West for 7 miles and the ground very bad, mostly rock. 6pm Jerry tanks 500 yards away and our tanks attacked them and we moved East again, travelled until 3am.

Jun 30th

Moved again 4.30am - almost left behind. Still going due East. We are all getting very tired now through loss of sleep, old Megan doing well.

July 1st

Had breakfast and ready to move. Tanks and guns moved into our camp. Things don't look too good for us now.

Jul 2nd

Still in the same camp, nothing at all happened today. Tanks and guns moved up. Done no work now for 6 days, looks like rain - had a little last night.

Jul 3rd

Recieved word to return to my own Sec., now awaiting official confirmation. Got this at 1pm. Started back at 1.30pm, arrived back at Hammon just in time to see two of our planes brought down.

Sep 15th

Went to free pictures provided by the Red Cross

Sep 16th

Went to another house today, Mr and Mrs Cook; had a good tea but it is a grand change for us to have someone to talk to that is not in the services - it is more homely.

Sep 20th

Left 161 transit Camp for Sarafan

Sep 21st

Left Sarafan for Benjaman Reinforcement Camp

Arrived at Bose Depot, met a few lads I know and Dr Brock's brother.

Oct 6th

Left Bose Depot for 8 L of C Signals, Alexandria. Arrived same day.

Oct 7th

Posted to Alexandria Signals at Ras-El-Tin, most of our work is in the harbour on cables to the ships.

.....................................

Unfortuantely, George's diary entries end suddenly here - for some unknown reason. It is not known whether George lived on or met an untimely fate, and if anyone reading this can supply any further information on George Townson, it would be appreciated if they would leave a message for us.
