Wartime Experiences
Relaxing to the Big Band, V.E.Day celebrations in the Leas Cliff Hall, I recalled those days in 1939 in London, my birthplace.
I met my dear husband in l941, we were in Regent Street, V.E.Day , packed with people, he asked me the time, I looked at my gold watch and it was not on my wrist. It had been inscribed from Mum and Dad for winning my scholarship, ten years ago and was my dearest treasure, so that is my memory for V.E.Day 鈥 to lose that!
Folkestone at War
My husb was a Folkestone man and he brought me here 1941-42 to his home and to my dismay, he had to sign for me to which I cheerfully remarked 鈥淲ho do they think I am 鈥. 鈥淢ata Hari鈥. `
During this time, I sang on the Stage in the Leas Cliff Hall 鈥 鈥淎ve Maria 鈥 and then .J!Attendrai, the hall was packed with troops etc. They brought a Microphone to me and I remember saying:- 鈥淵ou can take that thing away鈥.
My husband had a Dance Band in Folkestone in his young days but was on the Mulberry Dock in the Channel for the War effort at that time.
Competitions were being held as to how many Doodle Bugs were brought down in the Channel by our Troops- there were so many!
