This Story is submitted by a volunteer on behalf of Radio Bristol Action Desk at City of Bristol College.
My brother in law was in the Navy - my husband was in the Marines - and I was in the ATS. One time after being on leave we didn't want to go back quite yet. We should have gone back on the Monday after leave but I decided to say I'd been ill. We decided to go to the pictures already in uniform so we could go back straight after. We were about to leave when the doorbell went - my sister-in-law answered and it was the red caps - they'd come for me. I ran upstairs, put my dresing gown on and hid in my bed with the blankets over my head. I was giggling so much, they thought I was crying - they said I should go back as soon as I was better. Even though they believed I was ill I was still confined to barracks for a week.
Another time, my friend and I were stationed by the Downs, we were supposed to parade through the centre of Bristol and we let the others go on and stayed at the back. Then we got on the bus and got down to the centre before the parade got there.
It's amazing I wasn't thrown out.
