This happened in Mid 1942 when I was growing up in Swindon, Wiltshire. During the day a single German bomber overflew the town and circled around the railway station and track that passed to the rear of the houses in Dean street where I lived. It flew around a second time and dropped a stick of bombs which landed not far from my home. Fairly quickly a Spitfire (or Hurricane) chased the bomber and shot it down. I recall seeing the parachutes decending. We later heard that they had missed what we thought was the target ie the Railway line and thought how poor the bomb targetting was.
Apparently a plot of the impacts were they moved half a mile or so North would have landed along the railway line, taking it out up to the station. Missing the houses. This was one of the few raids in Swindon, I do not think anyone was killed.
