When I was 18 yrs old I had to work in the Land Army. I worked at Ashwellthorpe and cycled home to Wymondham. I was the only girl on the farm — wished there had been more. The people were good to work for but nothing particular happened.
Most evenings a crowd of us would go dancing on either Hethel or Morley U.S.A.F. base. They would send a bus to Wymondham to pick us up. I loved dancing and the American music played live by some of the airmen. There was plenty of beer and good food handed around. I didn’t drink the beer because I was worried about getting home. My Dad was strict but Mum used to leave the window open and I climbed in over the stone sink. Not so many people came home in the bus as went.
After 4 yrs as a land girl I went back to the Co-op Brush Factory.
