The truck i was in broke down. the pltoon sargent. used to replenished our rations each night until one morning i woke and found their was no one about there we were on our own we had to use our emergence rations on the truck we did this for four days i saw some movement in the distance and i said to the men in my section im going to find out who they are they turned out to be south africans under comand of captain owen-smith (the former captain of the south african rugby team) he agreed that we could feed with him while he got in touch with my platoon we did this for two days. then along came a breakdown truck driven by newzelanders i went back to the unit and complained about being left on our own the platoon sargent who left us on our own left the platoon next day and i was premoted to corpill and then got ready for the battle of alemein.
