I became interested in trains around this time, in 1941, and remember the Austerity engines from about 1943 onwards. I remember the American engines, which had a very deep whistle, coming in at Rugby. The crowd of us on the platform would besiege their train, and ask for sweets, cigarettes etc!
I also remember Stoughton Aerodrome being built, and the runways there being rolled out with steam-rollers, as opposed to diesel rollers. The aerodrome was used to train the fighter pilots and was used for Dakotas with horsa gliders. We saw Eisenhower inspecting the air-born division at the end of a runway.
