Tom Fleming was my father and tells the tale of coming off two till ten shift at the local Steelworks. My mother would get him two bottles of beer to enjoy after his shift. This evening the sirens sounded and everyone went to the shelter, the women and children would be ushered inside but the men would stand outside waiting for the action to start. The drone of the planes could be heard, then the whistle of the bombs as they fell. This was the time to dive for cover in the shelter. My father was enjoying his bottle of beer at the time but when the bomb dropped near by and he took a swig, all he was left with was the neck.
