The sirens wnt off, but we never bothered in Macc because it was normally never bombed. It was towards bedtime, I went up the stairs, got to the landing then all of a sudden there was a flash of light, like lightning and every window in the hoyuse rattled. I later found out it was a landmine that the Germans had dropped in the hills near Ecton. It was quite far away, and the only windows that were blown in were the Co-Op's on Sunderland St. Everyone thought that they must have had thinner glass than everyone else! Philip and I went up the next day and there was this bloddy big crater with bits of parachute and schrapnel lying all around.
