During the War there were guided tours of Dover Castle for servicemen and they were free.
The guide was dressed in a dark uniform. Then one day he was in battledress with three stripes on his arm. Then after a short time he was gone.
What has this got to do with me and my mates? Well we had gone on so many of the tours, we go to know the castle very well, so we took servicemen around. Then came the 鈥淎ny Gum Chum?鈥 Yes the GIs had arrived and we took them on tours and had our first taste in a long of sweets, chocolate and gum.
With the arrival of the GIs it was the first time we had seen negros 鈥 鈥淏lack men鈥 to us.
One remark I will always remember happened when I said to one them 鈥淢r. Black Man鈥 and he replied 鈥淚 am black and you are white, so we are both coloured 鈥 so please call me Mr Coloured Man鈥.
In this modern day and age where we use the term 鈥楤lack and White鈥 regarding race, I always remember the GI and prefer the term 鈥楥oloured鈥.
