What my father used to do when we had a leak in the kettle or saucepan was to put a washer on the inside and outside of the hole and screw them tightly together and hope this would seal the leak - it usually did.
When people were looking to buy a kettle or pan at a jumble sale, they would check to see if it had a hole or had already been 'mended'.
