I was only 4 when the war began, and my mother protected me from it by not saying anything that would upset or frighten me.

I do remember the rationing, but luckily we had friends who owned a shop, and they always saw we had enough鈥 we were still rationed, but they saw that we never went without. We had two big vases on the fireplace. One was full of tea. The other was full of sugar. I will never forget mother pointing her finger at me and saying, 鈥 Now, you must never, NEVER tell anyone what鈥檚 in those vases.鈥 Of course I never did tell anyone 鈥 I never dared!

The blackout was something else I remember. Mother sent me to the shop, which was only 2 doors away, to get the groceries. The shop keeper said to me,鈥 You know where you鈥檙e going don鈥檛 you?鈥 He told me exactly where to go when I left the shop so I wouldn鈥檛 get lost in the blackout. I left the shop and walked straight into a wall!
