Howell Gwynedd was stationed in Derby before going out to Burma in 1940. During his time in Derby he used to go to the Welsh Chapel in Green Lane and the weekly Welsh newspaper "Y Cymro" reported a concert which took place there at which he sang a solo. He had a lovely bass voice and came from a family who were all excellent singers. He used to be invited with other Welsh soldiers to tea in Breadsall with a Mr and Mrs Price who kept open house for the Welsh soldiers and were memebers of the Welsh chapel.
During this time his wife, Peggy Alexandria Violet Thomas used to travel with Robert Gwyn, their first child, to stay in a bed and breakfast on the Asbourne Road in Derby so that they could see each other before he was sent overseas. The landlady made a new pot of tea on a Monday and used the same tea leaves all week, until the tea had no colour at all. The house was built at an angle to the road and was still there until 2001 as part of an animal feed company until it was pulled down for re-development.
