I was a boy of five years old, living at Lincombe, Lee, Ilfracombe, North Devon, and there were several U.S. military camps near us. The family made many friends of the troops. They supplied us with ‘goodies’ which we could not get. They often came to Sunday lunch and, sometimes, tea. Great times and many good friends!
Later on, in 1943, I was taken to London for the weekend. How my parents allowed this I do not know, as bombing was still going on. A flying bomb actually demolished a cinema, the evening after we had attended the afternoon show.
