In 1938 Dulwich College Prep School evacuated to Cranbrook Kent in huts.
The journey started from the school in Dulwich, we were issued with gas masks and walked to Crystal Palace railway station. As I was one of the younger boys ( 7 years old) I was allocated to one of the 2 school cars. Unfortunately on arrival at Cranbrook camp there was no supper left! The boys who went by train had eaten all the meat stew supper, forgetting the boys travelling by car!
In 1940 we were all moved to the Royal Oak Hotel in Bettws Y Coed, North Wales which the school had taken over. I was there until 1944.
During this period a German Bomber came down the valley dropping 7 bombs before being shot down. The German pilot was found the next morning on a mountain, frozen to death.
