I was living in Apsley Cotts, Chartham near Canterbury during the war with my older brother and sister and my mother.

When the blitz on Canterbury happened, Mum had gone to watch 'Gone with the Wind'. I was staying with my sister at her place of employment (Dr Rashiegh on The Green). I watched the fires with her from the top window worrying about Mum. She arrived home about 11pm. Next day the barrage balloons appeared!

I can still remember the smell of burnt buildings.
