I am at the Women in the War exhibition in Croydon and I have just heard the local children sing, from the Amy Johnson school. It reminded me that when I was a little girl, I came here to Croydon Airport, and I was actually present when Amy Johnson landed. There was such a lot of great excitement and we bought little favours from the roadside to wear to welcome her home, and it was so exciting. And I clearly remember hearing her speak over the microphone after she landed.
I was here in Croydon in the Fire service all through the war and I鈥檓 in a book written about it all by Belinda. There are photos of me in it and the one of me when I was younger is all right, but the one when I am older is horrible!
