In 1942 when I was 7 years old I moved with my parents from Colchester to Chelmsford. We lived in Henry Road with our back garden backing onto Hoffman's factory and, although we did have a Morrison indoor shelter, during air raids we went to a kind neighbour's well-constructed Anderson shelter where my mother and I spent many hours during the night with the wife and children in the shelter whilst the husband and my father stood outside watching for German aircraft. In December 1944 we moved from Chelmsford to Dovercourt but for some reason the removal firm brought the date forward by two days. The night before we would originally have moved a V2 rocket landed in a neighbour's garden causing death and devastation in the factory. Some near neighbours were killed in this raid, including my school friend and her parents. My mother kept letters received from neighbours describing this event and in 1994 I deposited them with the Record Office in Chelmsford.
