My brother ,Terry, and I were evacuated from the Plymouth area to Par in Cornwall. Before that event we spent about a year enduring nightly airraids on the nearby Plymouth dockyard. We used to wear tin hats and go outside, without mums consent of course, to see if any shrapnel would bounce off them- fortunately we never found out!!!!. We would find on the way to school, which --in our opinion should have been bombed-- lots of shrapnel and tail fins of incendary bombs, which we kept for many years. My father-we hardly ever saw, he was a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and was away for about 3 years- .He served on HMS SPARTAN which was sunk-he was 10 hrs in the water- and later on HMS AURORA till his demob in 1946.
