My Grandad fought in the war. He came home on leave one day to find the family gone and the house sealed up. My mother, his 5 year old daughter, was in hospital with scarlet fever and the family home had been fumigated. No one had been allowed to visit my mother but Grandad was allowed to go because of his uniform. He took her a teddy bear which she treasured. When she was discharged from hospital the teddy had to be left behind and destroyed.
