At St. John's Primary School (then at Caudwell Hall Road) I used to go out and watch the barrage balloon when it went up. I used to always get into trouble because of this. Just right off the road were bomb disposal teams, billetted there. We would go and look at their 'work' outside the houses.

Then we were evacuated to Leicester. They seemed to have the street lights on. One day we were taken to the Cinema to see Pinocchio. We had to get back all of sudden because of a raid. They had hit a chemists. We looked at it, it was like a fire-work display.

Another thing I remember was going to relatives in East Bergholt. We went by gas-fired bus. They had a trailer behind with the gas cylinders. The buses didn't work very well. At hills we had to get off to let them get up the slope.
