During the war, I was in a garden helping my local farmer, doing some general work in Upper Stanton, when we heard a tremendous bang. We glanced up to see smoke, thinking it was fire coming from a local school. In fact, it was coming from the church. I dived under the stairs with my mother quite disturbed by what had just happened. Unfortunately, my dad was working so he couldn't help my mother and me. the church had been hit by a 'bofur's gun' shell, which were used to protect the aerodrome. The shell went through the roof of the church. I remember holding the ladder for my uncle, by the name of Burt Mann, whilst he repaired the roof. thankfully, no one was hurt from this incident. I, to this day, don't know the cause of why the shell went off in the first place.
