Mt Grandad Tom Clark fought in World War One in the Scottish Grenadiers. He was in the Home Guard in World War Two in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. My Dad, Archie Clark, about 14 or 15 at the time, told me how the German bombers would fly over the farm on their way to bomb Glasglow.
One evening a German figher was shot down not far from the Clark farm ‘Woodlands’. I believe two young British soldiers arrived at the wreckage first and took the German pilot custody.
My Grandad out ranked the soldiers and took the pilot under arrest. He gave false details as to his identity, but when questioned by more senior military officers, identified himself as Rudolf Hess, the second most powerful political figure in Nazi Germany.
