Uncle Jack and Uncle Betty came round one Sunday morning and Dad turned the radio on to listen to the Prime Minister (Neville Chamberlain). We listened to him saying that the British Government demanded that they move their troops from Poland but no such assurance had been given therefore this country is in a 'State of War with Germany'. There was about a minute, I suppose where nobody spoke. My Dad said 'Well! they're in for a hell of a hiding this time' He had been in the Royal Flying Core during the First World War.(He was a machine gunner in a F E 2B two seater aircraft and claimed to have shot down 4 german aircraft. The 4 never changed how ever many times the story was told) It took a lot longer than he thought to win the War but he dead was right in the end.
