We had an air raid, and the planes were overhead, the noise was dreadful and frightening. We where in the shelter with our mum who was trying to keep us calm. As best as she could when one of the M.Ps came to our door to tell us that a land mine had been caught up in a tree and we would all have to be evacuated from our street. My poor mum with her seven children had to gather up blankets etc. To take use to my aunt鈥檚 who lived the other end of Penryn. It was so frightening though I was only seven years old I can still clearly remember. What I saw all the glass from shop windows was blown out and Penryn鈥檚 town clock face was all in bits on the road. There were lots of other people with children from our street some were crying and shouting with fear. There were firemen putting out fires and a horrible smell of burning. My brother kept a piece of the face of Penryn鈥檚 town clock which he found on the road and we were walking on glass and other bits of debrey in the road.
