One night during the war we had an incendiary bomb which came through the roof and landed in the kitchen where our dog was sleeping. This un-nerved him so much that he could not settle and began having fits (he was 13 years old) We had no alternative but to have him put down. He was taken to the local pharmacist who was prepared to do the necessary but was unable to disperse of the remains. However if we would pay an extra shilling, he would deliver the body to our house so the dog was put in a sack and brought home in a wheelbarrow. When my dad came home from work he had the job of digging a hole in the garden and burying him. I cannot divulge the dog's name as it would be considered racist in this day and age, but he was a part retriever and all black!
