As a child of 6 years old when the war started, i lived in air raid shelters and spent 9 months living in and out of City Road tube station.I was evacuated when i was 8, to Manea near Ely, i never saw my mother again after she put me on the train as she was killed, and left 6 children.
My father was a fireman in the city of London all through the war. At the end of the war we were all farmed out to different aunties until my father re-married, and we returned.
When i was 6 we used watch the spitfires shooting at german planes.I loved it down in the tube because we were treated by Americans and Canadians soldiers to apples, oranges and chocolate, which we'd never had before. Plus we all ended up fleas in our hair, which was upsetting because we had to have all our hair cut off.
The auntie and uncle that i was evacuated to were absolutely wonderful, although they are both dead now and i miss them terribly.
