When my great grandad Fred left school he went to work on the trawlers in the engine room. After sitting all his exams he became a Chief Engieer and when the Second World war started he joined the Royal Naval Reserves because the Navy took control of the trawlers, turning them into mine-sweepers and used thier crews. When he was in the Royal Navy he became a Chief Petty Officer and was again in charge of the engine room.
