My sister and I had a frightening experience during the war. I was 11 yrs old and my sister was 17 yrs old. We were walking along by the Penzance railway station and heard the drone of a plane. We looked up and saw what I thought were leaflets falling down. Next thing a soldier came running out of the public house opposite the station and pulled my sister and I inside saying, "Quick, they are bombs!" and sure enough they were!
In our house we had a Morrison shelter in our front room. My Mother put a double mattress on the top, and another inside, and that is where all the family slept. During one air raid we were looking out of the front room window and I remember seeing tracer bullets going past our neighbours chimney. Of course, I didn't know what they were at the time, but I can still picture them in my mind.
Another memory is when an incendiary bomb dropped on a house behind ours. The next day I went to have a look where the house had once been and all I can think of is the smell - it was horrible and I can still recall that smell.
