Rosemary
My sister Rosemary was born on the 13th September 1940. During the war we lived with my mother and father and weren't evacuated.
Before my sister was born, my mother was rushed into hospital, ready to give birth, and I was taken along.
The hospital was down a small, country lane in Chester.
Soon after she had been born, to our shock a German bomb landed nearby, and the whole hospital was evacuated. This was really scary, and quite a shock.
Operation Market Garden
My late husband Gerald Worsfold was part of an operation to push back the Germans in Arnham Holland. He was in a glider which was pulled by a plane, and then with many others, fell to the ground, ready for the attack. But to his surprise, the Germans were waiting for them. They were captured, marched to Germany and kept in a Prisoner of war camp, for a few months. Luckily, he managed to escape with a friend to Czechoslovakia, who were on our side. From there, he managed to get back home and was sent to the 1st battalion of Worcester region.
Gas Masks
When the sirens went off, everyone was scared and rushed to the shelter. At school once, the sirens went off, we all had to file out and go down to the air raid shelter. Everyone had a gas mask in a box over their shoulder. I didn't like the shelters as I am claustrophobic. It was really scary.
Six Pence Stamp On A Bomb
In Chester once, I was walking down a road and noticed a small wooden hut. Outside was a huge bomb. It cost sixpence to buy a stamp and stick it to the bomb. Once they were full up, they were flown over Germany and dropped.
