This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Karen Joyce from Westree Learning Centre and has been added to the website on behalf of Bernard Winter with his permission and they fully understand the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
I was 9 yrs of age when the war started; my school at that time was at All Saint鈥檚 Senior having left Tovil Junior which made the year about 42ish.
At that time we walked everywhere, I only started to use buses once I had left school at 14 and started work, which was a 58 hour week, I might add.
Whilst walking home one lunch-time on my own, I had reached about half way along King Edward Road, In Maidstone, when I heard quite a few aeroplanes over head, not even thinking about the danger, I stood and watched them.
After a while little black objects started to fall from beneath the planes, just at that moment I was lifted off my feet and thrown over a low front garden wall, no, it wasn鈥檛 the bombs, a man that was walking just behind me had picked me up and thrown me and proceeded to lay along side and shield me with his body.
Today he would have been accused of child molesting. Then the ground shook with the bombs that hit Mill Street and West Station, which unfortunately, killed two Dray Horses which were delivering beer to a nearby pub.
Once everything had quietened down off we went. On own our separate ways.
