WW2 Memories; Andrew Durdan Eccles;

I was in the 911 company 1st armoured division. I was in charge of vehicle mechanics; I had to keep records of vehicles and inspections, parts and repairs. The vehicles had to be kept fit for transporting ammunition and petrol where ever they were needed.
When we were in Tripoli in the middle of the desert we saw an arch way built by Mussolini鈥檚 troops, we called it 鈥渕arble arch鈥, on top of the arch was the figure of a nude goddess, someone had climbed up and painted a red bikini on her.
I didn鈥檛 hate the Germans; most of them were just doing a job and following orders like us. Apart from the extreme policies of the Gestapo, most of the ordinary army were just good soldiers.
