This story has been written onto the 大象传媒 People's War site by CSV Storygatherer Robin. D. Bailey on behalf of author Victor 'Donald' Delves. They fully understand the terms and conditions of the site.
It was one day in Italy that we were about to cross another river that I met Clifford Hailey on the river bank.
It was very cold, in winter, and I had a small tin of earth mixed with petrol to keep my hands warm. A voice from behind said "Hello, 'Delvser'" and on looking round, I was so surprised to see my friend Clifford Hailey. He was at that time driving a Bren Gun Carrier.
Clifford Hailey was a Redruth boy I grew up with, and we both worked at the Crofty Tin Mine not very long after leaving school.
It was only for a short while that we had a chat, then both of us were back in action.
It was not until a few years after the war that the 大象传媒 came to my house and took Clifford and myself to Penzance to meet up with a Corporal Lawry, and the three of us were interviewed by one of the staff; I still have my copy of the recording. We talked about Italy, when we were at the front line.
Unfortunately, Clifford Hailey is no longer with us and I am not sure about Corporal Lawry at Penzance.
I would like to thank Radio Cornwall for puting on this very nice reunion for us.
