I went to Truro High School and I left in 1940. I left on the Wednesday and by the Saturday I was in the WRNS.
At first I was at HMS Forte l in Falmouth and then HMS Forte 4 at Penryn — which was Coastal Forces. Some of those in these coastal forces went to Santander.
After this I went with the convoy to Durban and Cape Town — this was a circuitous route and we were surrounded by destroyers for protection. The WRNS were on the radio deck — unlike today when the crews are mixed.
I married a South African airman and when I became pregnant I was sent back to Scotland — this time on a big ship. By this time my husband was in Italy. He returned to England when daughter was about 6 months old. She also had three sons, one in England, one in South Africa and the other in Canada.
