In 1942 I was a flight engineer on a short nose Blenheim bomber operating in Iraq. My problems didn't come from the enemy. We were on our way back to our base when we were hit by a rainstorm followed by a sandstorm. This got the pilot lost and he decided to land as we were low on fuel, because he hadn't taken my advice to put more fuel in the plane. Unfortunately the flat looking area he chose was only a crust covering unstable ground and the plane turned over giving me a severe cut to the head. My only injury in the whole war!
