My experience as an 11-12 year old child during the war years living in Woodsite, Aberdeen.

One clear memory is of having to hide under the wash house tubs while our Anderson shelter was being machine gunned before we could reach it. Many of my school friends were killed.

Another was being evacuated out of our house when an unexploded bomb was found at the bottom of our street.

If there was an air raid before midnight we went to school at the normal times. If it was after midnight we didn't go until the afternoon. The reason being to get some sleep.

We used to stand on our staircase and watch the spitfires returning to Dyce airport doing the victory roll.

I had nine uncles and my brother in the forces who thankfully they all came home safely. My father worked in the harbour area and did a fire watching rota.

We knitted socks, scarfs and gloves, and wrote the forces.
