The story is about the sinking of the MV Mamutu. This vessel left Port Moresby, Papua, on the 6th August, 1942.
Mumia, described as native, the wife of Nicholas Farr P.I.E. was on board with crew and passengers of some 109.
It was sunk by a Japanese Submarine some 61 years ago in the Gulf of Papua. It travelled from Port Moresby and was going to Daru.
There was one survivor - William Griffin.
Sergeant Farr who won a Military Medal for his exploits on 24 January 1943 with a patrol of 4 Papuan Infantry Battalion members ambushed a party of 22 Jaspanese Soldiers near the Kumusi River in Papua (they were all killed). He himself is reported to have killed 11 of the Soldiers.
Perhaps the memory of his wife's loss may have been honoured in that ambush.
