My Mother ran a Cafe and tobacconist on the A1 on the outskirts of Peterborough. I can remember the young airmen coming in for coffee and cigarettes. They seemed very young even to a 5 year old.
I can remember the enemy aircraft flying over going to Coventry.
My Mother was pegging outwashing when a stricken enemy fighter crashed nearby.
My Father was very security conscious and had a concrete shelter built in the garden. We used it most at the start of the war. My Father was an ARP warden and he used to let us know what was happening locally.
Next to us was a garage that was converted to the manufacture of small products. The staff had some Canadian girls working for them.
Due to my Mother's work she was unable to go out with me until she closed the Cafe at night and I can remember going for walks with her in the blackout. It was pitch black at the time.
