my uncle went over to burma (rangoon) in 1941-1942 he was a lance corp in the camaroon,s as far as know it was a secert mission they fought the chindix when they were there it took them nine month,s to get out the jungle only 1 of them survive staff sergeant john friend my uncle died over there we dont know were he was buried my grandfather got his burma star also there was a book written about it john friend wrote the book

Dear Miss Jamaicia

Sounds as if your uncle was in the 1st Battalion The Cameron Highlanders. They served throughout the war in the 5th Infantry Brigade under command of the 2nd Infantry Division.

The Cameron Highlanders initially saw service in France and Belgium, fighting in the rearguard battles of St. Omer - La Bassee from 23 to 29 May 1940, prior to their evacuation from Dunkirk.

After being brought back to strength in the UK, they were sent to India and then Burma, there they participated in the lengthy battles for Kohima (27 March 1944 - 22 June 1944), Mandalay (12/13 February 1945 - 21 March 1945), and the campaign along the Irrawaddy River (29 March 1945 - 30 May 1945).

You say that "as far as know it was a secret mission they fought the chindix". Could I respectfully point out to you that they didn't fight the 'chindix', nor so far as I can establish, were they on any secret missions. The Chindits were British troops, led by Major General Orde Wingate, that operated deep in the Burmese jungle. You can learn all about them here: ^{About links}

Whatever the case, you can be proud of your uncle. In Burma he and his comrades faced not only an implacable enemy but some of the worst conditions on earth.
