I thought this story would lighten your spirits. During the war My Gran worked at Clyde bank helping to create guns. It was on her day off one summer night in 1940 when the most of her family were gathered in the living room chatting with neighbours, the air raid siren went off and as my gran and her family did not yet have an Anderson they would sit under the stairs until the "All clear" was given.
As my gran made her way to the furthest corner of her staircase a bomb (or what she thought was a bomb) fell from above her in the room upstairs. she started screaming for help and continued to do so until her mother shook her and asked her what was wrong? My gran explained that she had felt a bomb hit the roof and fall Downstairs. To the amusement of the rest of the family her brother rushed down the stairs and shouted "is that enough pillows?" The "bomb" had been a pillow which my Great uncle had thrown from the rooms above to help protect her!
This story is always used in my house to remind family members that it wasn't all death and destruction during the war. hope you enjoy the tale as much as we do!
