During the war there was a great sense of community. Everybody helped everybody else. I was eight years old at the time. We spent most of our nights sat on the cellar steps and we still got up for school in the morning. In the morning we would get up and go looking for shrapnel which had fallen into the street. At Christmas my Aunt would entertain the evacuees and the American forces, who were based in Warrington at Burtonwood. There was also an Italian prisoner of war camp near by. They were always really friendly and were able to move around outside the camp. They used to come to my Aunts house for a cup of tea.
