My mother and I made most of our clothes. Even after the war I made my daughter鈥檚 coat from Grandma鈥檚 overcoat and I made an overcoat for my son from an old suit of mine.
My mother knitted Dad鈥檚 socks and we both knitted clothes for our evacuee children and balaclavas and scarves for the soldiers which the Red Cross would collect.
My mother also cut up odd bits of materials to make rag rugs.
During the war I took the Brownies at Boxford and can remember the children dutifully going round the fields collecting rosehips, (found to be particularly rich in vitamin C), to make into syrup for babies.
