During the war I lived in Stretton Sugwas and I worked at Barronia Metals in Blackfriars Street in Hereford. It was an offshoot of a firm in London. We used to make aeroplane parts. We worked 12 hour shift either day or nights. It was tedious work the machines were noisy and you would get very dirty and greasy. We use to go to dances, there was lots of American soldiers. The black soldiers were allowed out on alternate nights from the white soldiers. At the dances there was always a band playing either at the town hall in Hereford or in the hostel at Red Hill. A truck from Foxley would be sent to pick up people from the town or villages to take them to the dances. The food was always lovely, it was what most of us went for.
The American soldiers looked glamorous in their uniforms, they were very smart and also very well paid. If you went out with one they would give you presents such as tins of fruit or ham.
