Life on ship was hard, what with living with 200 other blokes. For 4 years we slept in Hammocks, and I loved them. No matter how much the ship moved the hammocks stayed still.
Food was nearly all dehydrated stuff, potatoes and the like. If we could get some eggs we would turn an iron face up, place a tin plate on the iron and cook the eggs on the plate, worked a treat
