On 16th June 1944, my father, (Chiller Starns) was wounded whilst serving with the 2nd Durham Light Infantry in Mao Songsan in Burma. On the same day our house in South Ockendon Essex was bombed. I also was wounded, albeit very slightly. In subsequent years, I made much more of my experience, although I can't remember it, than he ever did. Like many of those who fought in the far east he rarely spoke of the war. In his diary he wrote a very brief account of his experience, and then, after finding out about the bombing, added, "My unlucky day."
