This story was submitted to the people鈥檚 war site by a volunteer from Fivemiletown Primary School on behalf of Violet Lee and has been added to the site with her permission.
It is sixty years since the Second World War. During that time a lot of lives were lost and lots of bombs were dropped. Belfast had many places blown up; the enemy was keen to blow up the airports and the shipyards to destroy the country. There were lots of American soldiers over in Northern Ireland and they went round in big jeeps. The people of the area tried to be friendly towards them and made them tea even though groceries were rationed and the people had very little to spare. Older members of the family knit socks fro them to keep them warm. Some women made cakes and buns for the soldiers. Some local girls married soldiers and went back to America to live. The soldiers slept in steel huts. Some huts were put up at Aughentaine estate outside Fivemiletown. The soldiers ate candy and some times they would throw some to local children as they were driving along in their jeeps. Very few people had cars during the war. Petrol was also rationed and everybody needed coupons to buy some. Lots of people took in evacuees and looked after them. Some were kind to them and some were not.
