When I was a Twelve year old boy, I lived in Rusholm, my dad as in the army, me and three brothers and mum used to go down to the cellar for safety. One particular night a landmine had gone off on one area of the road and a bomb on the other end. I always remember the bombs went off and it used to whitewash all area of the cellar (where the bricks had come up)that was very frightening for a 12 year old boy.
I remember going through Saint Mary鈥檚 hospital trying to get to my grandma. The nursing home had a direct hit, I remember the smell of burning and the nurses blanket and the rubble that was scattered everywhere. I was escorted by a policeman through to my Grandma.
I remember one morning a local sweetshop had a direct hit and mum went to help and told me to stay put! I didn't, instead I picked up all the sweets from the jars on the floor, a policeman caught me and I trebbled with fear (I was more upset to put the sweets back on the floor). The policeman explained later that the sweets could have been contaminated and that was why he had shouted.
I also remember hearing the sound of a dog whimpering under the rubble, the emergency services managed to track him down and discovered a young baby. If it wasn't for the dog, the baby wouldn't have been saved.
