During the war I lived in Southall, Middlesex. My mother died in 1942 and my sister and I stayed together in the family home. It was in a cul-de-sac of 34 houses. I did Ministry work at Hayes, identifying planes coming over from France. I did this during the day. At night I worked for the London Auxiliary Fire Service. We took turns to do the fire watching. Most of the firs I attended were in hayricks etc., set alight after the corn had been cut. I went to London only once, to Putney when bombs had been dropped on a petrol refinery. I stayed the night at the police station and went on to my day job at 7-30pm.
I wasn't called up as a serviceman as I was in electronics before the war, radio work and the start of tv. Electronics was just coming those days.
West London fared better than the East End, with no severe blitzes. There were a few bombings though. Buzz bombs used to come over during the day. One stopped overhead and dropped on an air raid shelter, killing about 34 people.
