It was two days before the war began, and I was on holiday with my husband in Hastings, at that time we were courting. We used to stay in Bed and Breakfasts and then go out to local caf茅s for our lunch. I love blackberries, and I remember one particular day finishing lunch and saying to my husband I wouldn鈥檛 half like a blackberry pie! So my husband promised he would get me one the following day.
The next day arrived and we headed down to the beach, we hadn鈥檛 been lying there long when all of a sudden the streets were filled with children walking along holding gas masks. Up until this point everybody had said there wouldn鈥檛 be a war. I remember the children crying and people knocking on the doors trying to get residents to take the children in. The local people were more interested in holidaymakers then evacuees at that time.
The scenes were very upsetting, I remember saying to my husband, I can鈥檛 stay here and that I wanted to go home. We returned to our bed and breakfast and packed our things to return home, and you know I never did get my blackberry pie. This all occurred on the Friday and war was declared on the Sunday.
