"I was 9 years old when the war started. My father was a gunner in the HAA and stationed at Wanstead Flat, East London. One day us three brothers: Wal aged 14, Don aged 11 and me, Eric aged 12, decided we would pop over and see our dad. We lived at Sidcup in Kent and I don't know how we got over there but we did! On arriving we went over to the sentry posted outside the camp and said 'we come to see our dad.' He was not amused! We were put in the guard house and an hour later our dad arrived very red faced. He took us to a cafe for a drink and told us to go home, otherwise he would be in trouble - so away we went. Years later, we all learnt that our dear dad was overjoyed to see us, thinking his three sons went over 20 miles to see him - especially under the circumstances!
